Australia needs to honour its great visual artists, visionaries who can inspire the public to transcend the profit principle and the conformity of a routine existence and think more deeply about the world. Visual artists like musicians and writers are not afforded the status they deserve in this country. The indefatigable work of arts administrators, the unsung heroes of Australian visual culture, is also in need of proper acknowledgement through Awards such as those conferred by the Melbourne Art Foundation.
